<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: normal;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Lucia Berlin has been publishing astonishingly good stories
since the 60s. It wasn’t until the August 2015 release of <i>A Manual for Cleaning Women</i>, however, that readers got to know her
name.</span><span style="font-family: inherit;">She passed away in 2004. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: normal;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: normal;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Lucia Berlin wrote largely from life, which, over 68 years,
included enough heartache, adventure, physical pain, and joy for a number of
lifetimes. The 43 stories that comprise <i>A
Manual</i> range from tiny, flash-like pieces (“Macadam,” “My Jockey”) to
longer, more traditional narratives.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: normal;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: normal;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Her stories pull us into sunken circumstances with an earnest
appreciation for the simple things. They are insightful and real, and readers
will be warmed by Berlin’s unexpected observations and spellbinding voice.</span></span><br />

collective message that mothers pass on to daughters in some of this book's
most powerful stories might be summed up simply as "danger ahead,"
whether that be from predatory men or the difficulties engendered by the power
of their own sexuality. In the sobering title story, a dying woman who can no
longer speak aloud argues her case for her approach to life, and her record as
a parent, in the presence of her adult daughter. "Women get themselves
hurt every day — men mess with girls in this life, they always have, always
will — but there's no sense making hard luck and misery your life's work."</span></span><br />

The word r<i>esolution</i> comes from
the word resolve, or to undo. According to Ms. Marglin, "Resolve is a form of surrender, a way to set our most heartfelt desire free into the world. What sustains resolution, then, is more a willingness to grow than sheer willpower. It is a discovery of how our own happiness is inextricably intertwined with the well-being of others-and that comes down to great; bigger-than-life' goals." Each 1 hour class will break down 1 of the 5 steps to help you learn new breathing, meditation, and yoga techniques. But the fun does not stop there. Stress Less also happily invites the community of the Fox River
Valley Public Library to explore the vast collections and programs to make your a goal become reality. </div>

A new addition to the programs at the Fox River Valley Public Library District is the Stress Less program. I started the class because I have been practicing yoga and
meditation for 15 years and I would like to extend that knowledge to other
people. Being a librarian, I feel there are
so many resources I would like to share with the Fox River Valley Public
Library District community. Yoga, breath-work, and meditation are tools that
take no space and virtually no time during 24 hours. It’s something that
everyone can take with them and use when they see fit. I provide a space that
is both comfortable and safe for everyone and try something new. I give
modifications to yoga poses that may be challenging and alternatives cues if
one is not comfortable or to better understand the practice. <o:p></o:p></div>

Suyra Namaskar is sanskrit, which means to bow to the sun. <o:p></o:p>As the body moves through the poses, all of the muscles are engaged, lengthening and strengthening the limbs, and keeping the person focused for the rest of the day.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Then we focused on our breath by learning
about chakra meditation. This type of meditation helps focus your attention on different areas of your
body. While breathing, we focus on the 7 areas starting at the root of the
spine through the crown of the head; all while visualizing colors that area
represented with these areas. <o:p></o:p></div>

<i>Sun Salutations</i>, by Shiva Ray, has a great evideo on Overdrive showing the steps to the Sun Salutations. Videos are a great way to learn yoga poses while at home. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Chakra Yoga</i>, by Gurutej Kaur is another evideo on Overdrive. Again this is a great resource if you want to create your own yoga practice. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Practical centering : exercises to energize your chakras for relaxation, vitality, and health</i>, by Larkin Benett, is a great resource for learning chakra meditation. It is a simple guide that is easy to follow. </div>

People in this area have a don't-miss cultural opportunity this month: to see the First Folio or "the book that gave us Shakespeare." The First Folio is making the rounds in the U.S., and the only location in Illinois that will have it on display is the <a href="http://www.lcfpd.org/museum/" target="_blank">Lake County Discovery Museum</a>, located in Wauconda. Admission is free for this exhibition that runs through February 28.<br />
<br />
The First Folio is a compilation of many of Shakespeare's plays that was published in 1623 to preserve his work after death. <a href="http://www.lcfpd.org/museum/first-folio/" target="_blank">Find out more about the exhibit and accompanying programs</a>.<br />

This is the kind of book to read when you're looking for something sneakily soulful. Photographer Brandon Stanton has put together a fascinating book based on <a href="http://www.humansofnewyork.com/" target="_blank">his blog</a>. Stanton went around New York City and took portraits of people and includes a usually short, often very personal, quote from the subjects. He elicits some intimate information from these people. Although the book isn't laid out in a particular order, he often juxtapositions entries that are connected by theme of the subjects' statements or because the subjects have similarities in life circumstance.<br />
<br />
The photos are lovely, but it is the quotes that ultimately resonate. Some statements are devastating ("I found my mom's meth stash when I was four." "What'd you do with it?" "I ate it."). Some statements are insightful ("My ex-girlfriend seemed to love me a lot more than I loved her, so I made the mistake of thinking I didn't love her." or "For the longest time, I was so focused on being deaf in my left ear that I almost forgot my other ear was perfectly fine."). Some statements are complicated and lengthy, others are simple and to the point (an older gentleman states "It takes a hell of a lot of pills to keep me going."). It doesn't matter that these people live in New York. These are lives and stories one could find in any city or town. It's good to be reminded of our humanity sometimes.<br />

lives who just happen to appreciate each other’s quirks. Lisa Lutz explores the
dynamics of friendship in her 2015 novel <i>How
to Start a Fire </i>which follows three college friends through the treacherous
territory that is adulthood. Kate Smirnoff (like the vodka), Anna Fury, and
George Leoni met in 1993, when all three were students at UC Santa Cruz. Freshman
roommates Kate and Anna found George passed out on the lawn outside a party
they had all attended. The girls quickly become friends and are bound together
for life after a traumatic experience in their mid-20s. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">It’s
rare to find a novel that’s both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same
time. Letty Espinosa is suddenly handed responsibility for her two children, 6
year-old Luna and 15 year-old Alex, after her parents (the children's former caregivers) return to their childhood
home in Mexico. At first, Letty struggles with the inevitable challenges that
motherhood presents, fumbling her way through a series of bad decisions before
she gains her footing. <o:p></o:p></span><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Diffenbaugh
paints an eye-opening picture of modern day San Francisco for readers; she
introduces us to the immigrant families who are hoping to build a life for themselves
by working three jobs and living in devastating poverty, simultaneously holding
their families together. </span><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> </span><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> </span><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;">A
mysterious, luminescent mold infestation spreads through Brooklyn in the summer
of 2015, sparing no New Yorker in its path. The ‘supermold’ is first discovered
in the apartments of a rowhouse, entwining the lives of its residents: the
elderly twin sisters, Edie and Kat, one a retired librarian, the other a failed
bohemian; Vida, a middle-aged actress; and Ashley, an 18-year-old Russian au
pair discovered hiding in Vida’s closet.</span> <span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The narrative shifts between the four women as
they’re evacuated from their homes, until Edie eventually dies from spore
inhalation and Kat is left to face the entire bizarre situation alone with only the
company of a crazy cat lady and the unbearable grief that came with the loss of her twin sister. </span><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The novel is in some ways a character study and,
in others, a play on science fiction in its entirety. Ultimately, it’s weird
and that’s what I liked about it. <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/jarrylee/34-of-the-most-beautiful-book-covers-of-2015#.lkNzoBaAGv">Plus--the cover is really pretty.</a> </span><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Living
can be a distressingly solitary activity and Holmes explores this hard truth
with unexpected poignancy, subtlety and humor. Her characters are students and
urbanites and rule-breakers and quarter-life-crisis-havers, some of whom own
dogs or want to. Holmes is so skillful at characterization — weaving in
specific details that illustrate everyday desires, failures and striving — that
I was suddenly skeptical when I came to "My Humans," the
third-to-last story in the book, which is told from the point of view of a dog.
“My Humans", however, is every bit as moving as the other stories in the
collection and while not perfect it tells us just as much, if not more, about human
nature than the stories actually narrated by people. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">October is Family History Month, don’t ya know, and
starting your genealogy journey has never been easier thanks to <a href="http://www.finditillinois.org/tryit/">Try-It! Illinois</a>. The Illinois State Library, in collaboration with multiple
e-resource providers, launched Try-It! Illinois in 2001 to give Illinois
residents the opportunity to explore an extensive list of resources that aren’t
always available to them otherwise. This year, the trial will run from October
1, 2015 through November 30, 2015. The trial includes a variety of genealogy
and family history research tools including MyHeritage Library Edition and
FOLD3 Library Edition. For more information on how to access the trial, stop by
the Information Desk. Heck, you can even give us a call at (847) 428-3661. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">In addition to resources already offered to Library
patrons free of charge, access to these additional databases can make a world
of difference for genealogists. For example, FOLD3 is a subscription-based
service that provides users with access to US military records, including the stories,
photos, and personal documents of men and women who served. During the trial,
these military records are available to view free of charge. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span lang="en-US"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The easiest way to start researching your family history is by writing down what you already know on a pedigree chart. Start with yourself and work backwards. Fill in your parents, your grandparents, your great-grandparents and so on. Use a pencil so you can erase. When you are finished, it will be easy to tell which ancestors are missing. Record birthplaces and </span>birth dates<span style="font-family: inherit;"> too as you will need these to locate records.</span></span>

<span lang="en-US"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Brothers, sisters, parents, and other family members are valuable research tools. They might have new information to add to your chart, or at least be able to confirm what you’ve gathered so far. Again, keep in mind the importance of gathering dates and locations as you will need these in your future research. You will want to fill in a family group chart to keep track of who was married to whom and how many children they had. </span></span><span lang="en-US"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Family group charts and other useful forms, like the pedigree chart I mentioned above, can be found on Ancestry.</span></span>

housewife turned author who published her first book in 2013. <i>Everything is Perfect When You’re a Liar</i>
is a hilarious collection of essays that chronicles her life from her
misadventures growing up in Edmonton all the way to motherhood. Oxford’s
writing is marked by the same wry voice that’s made her a social media
sensation. She’s known for her sarcasm and in-your-face sense of humor; one of
my favorite tweets by her to this day reads, “The worst thing you could do to
someone is call them on the phone.” The stories included in her memoir range
from downright outrageous to almost sentimental and I highly recommend it to any
comedy fan. Her second book, reportedly titled<i> I Can’t Believe I Forgot to Tell You This</i>, is due out in the near
future. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

book is what initially prompted me to check it out because, hell, I wish I
would have thought of it first. Kaling’s career has really taken off since her
start as a college intern on <i>Late Night

play, done stand-up in New York City, written more than 20 episodes of the
popular NBC sitcom <i>The Office</i>, and written
and produced four seasons of her own series <i>The
Mindy Project.</i> Her memoir, published in 2011, begins with her addressing the
inevitable “Sure, you’re a woman in comedy but you’re no Tina Fey” comparison
head on. She writes, “I know, man. Tina’s awesome.” That line had me hooked. The book as a whole is a somewhat
messy collection of stories from her childhood that sometimes provides an
inside look </span><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">into Hollywood culture. The book takes a lot of

Perhaps the reason I enjoyed this title so much is because the content really
rings true to my life. Seriously, you guys have no idea how much time I’ve
wasted stressing out over how to respond to a 2 A.M. text message from a guy
who’s only communication with me after three days of silence reads, “yo”. Or
how awful I’ve made myself feel after crafting the perfect, witty response to
said text message and receiving nothing in return but a “lol”…like, I know
you’re not really laughing, okay? Ansari took the time with this book to
address these issues in a humorous light that made me realize how ridiculous my
problems are. He teamed up with New York University Professor of Sociology Eric
Klinenberg to incorporate research the pair conducted involving various
cultural groups and their dating habits/woes. The book is more of a sociological study than anything else, but it ultimately held my interest as a Millennial who's just as confused by love as I am by my credit score.</span></span></span></div>

<b> The 12 Bottle Bar: A Dozen Bottles, Hundreds of Cocktails, A New Way To Drink </b>by David and Lesley Solmonson.<br />
<a href="http://ccsp.ent.sirsi.net/client/frvpld/search/detailnonmodal/ent:$002f$002fSD_ILS$002f0$002fSD_ILS:2382855/nonmodal" target="_blank">Find it in the catalog!</a><br />
<br />
This book is great resource for anyone just getting into cocktails or wondering what to stock their bar with for optimal usage. However, even hardcore cocktail geeks like myself can find some unique and creative recipes in this title. <b>The 12 Bottle Bar</b>, as the title implies, highlights 12 different types of liquor for you to stock in your home bar, and then provides a plethora of recipes using each or a combination of those liquors. The authors also supply recommendations of what brands of alcohol to buy for each of the bottles, suggesting both low and medium priced options. The 12 bottles highlighted include:<br />
<ul>
<li>Brandy</li>
<li>Genever</li>
<li>Gin</li>
<li>Amber Rum</li>
<li>White Rum</li>
<li>Vodka</li>
<li>Whiskey</li>
<li>Orange Liqueur</li>
<li>Bitters</li>
<li>Vermouth</li>
</ul>
Thankfully, I already had all of these bottles (and several others) in my home bar, so I could pat myself on the back and dive into the recipes! However, I had to get some specialty ingredients like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orgeat_syrup" target="_blank">Orgeat syrup</a> and <a href="http://12bottlebar.com/recipe/grenadine/" target="_blank">Grenadine</a> to make a few of the cocktails (mostly of the tropical variety). To the authors' credit, they provide recipes for all their "mixers." I'm just lazy and would rather buy than make my own. Overall, I was really impressed with the quality and creativity of the recipes in this book.<br />
<br />
One of my favorite sections of the book was the vodka section. I'm a little bit of a snob when it comes to vodka. Which is to say, I think it tastes like nothing, and there are no cocktails that you can make with it that I wouldn't rather have gin or tequila in. However, this book makes a compelling case for the lesser spirit. The Lemon Drop is one of my dark, guilty pleasures as a pretend liquor snob, and their recipe for a Limoncello Drop is amazing! I add a pinch of basil or mint to garnish. I also was a fan of their straight forward recipe for a Kamikaze shot as well. Both good entertaining options for my less well drunk friends.<br />
<br />
Additionally, I appreciated their chapter on Genever, though I strongly disagree that it is a bottle cocktail newbies should buy. Genever is an acquired taste; it tastes like vodka mixed with cigarette smoke, and this is coming from a gin lover. However, I have an ancient bottle of Bols in my freezer that I regret buying, and I appreciated the suggestions to make it slighter more palatable! But for an actual home bar, I highly recommend buying some reposado tequila instead. <br />
<br />
While I disagree with the Genever recommendation, overall this is a wonderful book for anyone interested in cocktails or entertaining. A lot of cocktail books have the same old recipes for pre-Prohibition drinks like the <a href="http://www.cocktailia.com/cocktail-recipes/old-fashioned" target="_blank">Old Fashioned</a> or <a href="http://www.cocktailia.com/cocktail-recipes/last-word" target="_blank">Last Word</a>. This book has a some of those recipes, but they also have lots of lesser known or newly created recipes too. Best of all, you don't have to worry about blowing the bank on expensive, but lesser used liquors like Absinthe or Chartreuse to make any of the drinks in this book! <br />
I've been a big fan of British author Jojo Moyes's previous books including<b> </b><a href="http://ccsp.ent.sirsi.net/client/frvpld/search/detailnonmodal/ent:$002f$002fSD_ILS$002f0$002fSD_ILS:2284015/nonmodal" target="_blank">Me Before You</a> and <a href="http://ccsp.ent.sirsi.net/client/frvpld/search/detailnonmodal/ent:$002f$002fSD_ILS$002f0$002fSD_ILS:1804912/nonmodal" target="_blank"> The Last Letter from Your Lover</a>. She writes smart, thoughtful and funny women's fiction, often times with a historical component. One of the nice things about her growing popularity stateside is that several of her older works are now being widely published, including <b>The Ship of Brides</b>!<br />
<br />
Set just after World War II and based loosely off of real events, this book follows the journey of 650 war brides from their native Australia to England to be reunited with their British husbands. The brides travel aboard the HMS <i>Victoria</i>, a war ship, and are accompanied by over a thousand British naval officers. The book primarily focuses on four women who share a cabin on this voyage. <br />
<br />
Maggie is a heavily pregnant farm girl who was raised by her father and is generally used to being surrounded by men. Because she is a tomboy, she has no problem making friends with some of the men on the ship (in spite of the strict rules about fraternizing between the soldiers and the brides). She also has a warm personality and brings together the four roommates in spite their very diverse backgrounds. Out of the roommates, Maggie has had the longest relationship with her husband, Joe. <br />
<br />
Avice is probably the least immediately likeable character. She's a snooty and spoiled society girl who is unhappy with the conditions of her voyage, hoping to be on a cruise liner instead of a war ship. She finds the other three girls to below her preferred station of friends, but it still somewhat fond of Maggie.<br />
<br />
Jean is a teenage bride. She is quite immature and always trying to have a good time. She knew Avice before the trip, and much to Avice's dismay, winds up sharing a cabin with her. Jean comes from a more working class background than Avice and her love of partying sometimes gets her in trouble.<br />
<br />
Finally, Francis was a war nurse with a mysterious past. Francis is incredibly shy and tends to keep to herself, despite encouragement from Maggie and Jean. She says very little about her past or the man she is married to, but acts as a strong advocate for Jean when she gets in trouble. Because of her medical skills, she is also of assistance on the war ship.<br />
<br />
As one might expect, despite very strict rules and punishments, there is still quite of bit of mischief between the brides and the soldiers, with much higher stakes for the brides. As some brides begin to receive "Not Wanted, Don't Come" telegrams from their husbands, tensions begin to run high among the women on the ship. Their is also a very sweet, Austen-esque romance between one of the women and a naval officer. <br />
<br />
I really liked the book, but had one minor quibble. Avice is a pretty annoying character and it's easy to see where her plot line is going. That said, she was a good foil for the rest of the girls, in particular Francis, who has the most compelling narrative. Overall, this was a very enjoyable read about a little known part of history.
